A simple yet powerful message has been a meaningful part of the Concordia College Football program since 2004, when the Cobbers faced a powerhouse opponent on a memorable day in late October and earned a hard-fought victory. Since then, Coach Terry Horan has used Joshua 1:9 to help set the tone for the program each year and, more importantly, to help shape the lives of the young men on the team: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Every football player, past and present, has received a necklace with the Joshua Shield as a reminder of three enduring values: to lead with courage in difficult moments, to choose service over self-interest, and to stand firm when stepping back would be easier.

I was fortunate to be part of that 2004 team and able to witness that moment firsthand. My Joshua Shield remains with me today, just as it does for many former Cobber football players. While our lives have taken us in many different directions, the message behind it continues to resonate. It serves as a reminder that life will bring challenges, responsibilities, and moments of uncertainty, but also opportunities to respond with courage, steadiness, and purpose.

That same perspective is reflected in the work we do at Heartland Trust Company. The individuals, families, nonprofits, and businesses we serve are often navigating important decisions, complex circumstances, and significant life transitions. In those moments, having a trusted partner can make all the difference.

Wherever life may find you, it is reassuring to know you do not have to navigate it alone.
