Cancer Journey
Earlier this year in January, one of our team members, Amy Remmick, received a breast cancer diagnosis. With October being recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness month, Amy wanted to share a few tips to help you become your best advocate for early detection.
Trust Your Instincts: Pay attention to your body. If something feels off, trust your intuition, and seek medical advice promptly.
Educate Yourself: Knowledge is power. Understanding breast cancer risk factors, signs, and the importance of regular screenings empowers you to make informed decisions.
Ask Questions: Do not be afraid to ask questions during your appointments. Seek clarification if something is not clear. Being proactive in understanding your diagnosis, treatment options, and potential side effects is essential.
Seek Second Opinions: Different perspectives can provide valuable insights. If you are uncertain about a diagnosis or treatment plan, consider seeking a second opinion. Trust your intuition – it’s your health at stake.
Advocate During Appointments: Prepare for appointments by making notes and organizing your thoughts. Be an active participant during discussions with your doctor. Having a friend or family member accompany you can provide emotional support and ensure you do not miss critical information.
Be Persistent: If you suspect something is wrong, do not give up. Advocate for additional tests or evaluations. Timeliness matters and early intervention can significantly impact your treatment plan. In my case, I narrowly avoided chemotherapy and all its awful side effects, by advocating for myself.
From my personal experience with cancer, I want to emphasize the importance of self-advocacy. By being proactive, persistent, and informed, we can all contribute to early breast cancer detection with successful treatment outcomes. Let’s continue to spread awareness and encourage others to take charge of their health!
Did you know?
Every year National 401(k) Day falls on the Friday following Labor Day. This observance was established by the Plan Sponsor Council of America to highlight the importance of employer-sponsored retirement plans. It serves as a reminder that while the week begins with a focus on the workforce, it can conclude with attention on planning for retirement. It’s recommended that individuals review their retirement plans at least once a year to ensure they are on track for a secure future. So, take a moment to assess your retirement strategy today!
